Technology. Metrology. Production

The capabilities of the Institute include production of nuclear munitions, execution of all types of mechanical processing, different types of metal welding, manufacture of composite, porous, ceramic and other non-traditional materials and multiple protective coverings, production of automated machinery and radio-electronics.

Basic technological activities and studies underway in RFNC-VNIIEF:

• development of new materials;

• protective covers;

• metal processing under pressure;

• nano-technologies and nano-structured materials;

• welding and soldering of different materials;

• raised printed circuits;

• liner systems;

• chemical current sources;

• non-destructive control methods;

• specification of warranty life;

• studies of physical/mechanical and thermal-physical material properties.
  

As a result of studies referring to material science and development of new technological processes the new progressive materials are being introduced into production: amorphous and crystal alloys, shape memory alloys, rare-earth elements, X-ray-protected rubber, materials based on hollow glass/polymeric/metal microspheres and many other.

The Institute disposes of powerful technological, diagnostic and metal processing hardware.

Measurements are viewed to be the principal source of quantitative information about quality and characteristics of various products. The problems associated with measurements per say and the condition of measuring systems had always been the point of the highest concern in the Institute since the date of its foundation.

The metrological service constituent of the Institute is the parent organization within Rosatom, capable to execute the wide range of activities providing the unified and precise measurements in nuclear-weapon industry. Our service is the representative of the branch in scientific-technical Commission for Metrology and Measuring Equipment of “Rostekhregulirovaniye” as well as in different Russian technical committees responsible for optional measurement processes.

Successful functioning of the Service was mentioned at the sittings of the Board of the Federal Agency for technical regulation and metrology, as well as in 2008 report of the RF Government “The current state and the basic prospects for the activities providing the uniform measurements at the RF territory”.
Production sites of VNIIEF plant and electro-mechanical plant “Avangard”, disposing of high-tech equipment, make it possible to master the new technological processes.
Both plants produce pyrotechnical and explosive substances and the parts made of the same; products made of metal, composite, ceramic, powder and porous materials, plastics and rubber; automated hardware; parts and nodes for micro-electronics; unusual components involved into physical measurements.
Casting, stamping, welding, galvanic and instrumental shops together with the laboratory for defectoscopy, high pressure tests and verification tests, combined with the centralized plant laboratory, ensure not only production of high-quality and diverse products, but inspection of its quality, which confirms compliance with technical orders for resistivity to operational mechanic, thermal and climatic effects.
