On the 20 May 2015 IAEA delegation led by Tero Varjoranta, IAEA Deputy General Director, Head of Department of Safeguards, visited RFNC-VNIIEF. Russian delegation was represented by Grigoriy Berdennikov, RF Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Alexander Usol’tsev, Director of International Cooperation Department of “Rosatom” State Corporation, etc. The meeting was held in compliance with preliminary reached agreements and was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia and Permanent office of RF in Vienna international organizations.
There was organized a meeting of IAEA delegation with the Nuclear Center leadership. Valentin Kostyukov, RFNC-VNIIEF Director made a presentation “RFNC-VNIIEF- the center of national security”. Leading specialists of the Institute have presented their reports on topics of mutual interest. The parties have discussed perspectives of collaboration between RFNC-VNIIEF and IAEA in terms of IAEA guaranties implementation technical aspects.
VNIIEF guests have visited the Museum of Nuclear Weapons, RFNC-VNIIEF Education Center, laid flowers to the monument of Academician Khariton.
Mr Tero Varjoranta admired the high level of the Nuclear Center developments and confirmed interest of the Department headed by him in extension of collaboration with RFNC-VNIIEF.

Russia attaches great importance to IAEA monitoring activities. The Department of Safeguards is a monitoring agency which provides monitoring by means of specially developed methods and technologies. IAEA experts often practice “on-side inspections”.
