The meeting of VNIIEF delegation headed by the Director of the Department of Electrophysics Andrey Ivanovsky with representatives of the Department of Energy, USA, and US National Laboratories

The meeting of VNIIEF delegation headed by the Director of the Department of Electrophysics Andrey Ivanovsky with representatives of the Department of Energy, USA, and US National Laboratories (LANL, LLNL) took place on 12 December, 2013 in Washington.
The results of the activities under two contracts between VNIIEF and LANL were discussed and the problems of follow-up cooperation of VNIIEF with national labs in USA were considered. The meeting took place as part of execution of the first phase of the Agreement between the government of the Russian Federation and the United States of America “For collaboration in fundamental and applied sciences, scientific-technical and research-and-design activities in nuclear physics and power industry”. The Agreement signed in September, 2013, makes it possible to re-establish cooperation with the American colleagues from national weapon laboratories. This possibility is envisioned to be very fruitful both for the Russian and the American sides. The leaders of the State Corporation ROSATOM and the Department of Energy of the USA discussed the prospects of joint activities under the contract awarded in October, this year, during their meeting at the conference dedicated to the jubilee of the joint experiment for NW control. The contract affirms peer partnership, meaning that each party makes a peer contribution into work under the same.
The above format is quite unusual with respect to the relations which were established earlier between the respective labs. For both of them to understand clearly, what are the best ways to organize such a collaborative effort, further contacts and discussions are needed both at the level of leaders and at the executive level. The highest priority was given, as a result, to the ambitious joint project named “Contemporary Liner Technology” between VNIIEF and LANL, for the purposes of which a unique source of pulsed power based on the homemade disk explosive-magnetic generator of medium class will be implemented.
The employees of SNL and LLNL will be implementing the above project. The underlying proposal, signed by A.V. Ivanovsky on the Russian side and by B.Reinowsky on the American side was sent to the headquarters of ROSATOM and US DOD. Discussions of follow-up steps aimed at implementation of the above Agreement are planned to be held in April, 2014, during Khariton Readings in Sarov.
