RFNC - VNIIEF is the largest research center of Russia and an institution of worldwide significance
capable of meeting the challenges in science, defense and national economy.
With the highly professional and broad-minded personnel on one hand, and the
extensive experimentation and production capabilities together with the diversity of its tasks on
the other, the Institute has been able to come up with the technologies of great demand in the
modern market.
With the diversification efforts and market research, the RFNC - VNIIEF
analysts have identified a package of problems whose solution is critical for many branches of economy.
This includes problems in fundamental and general applied science, power, manufacturing and instrument
industry, environment and health, information and computing systems.
Computer simulation of physical phenomena is one of the major
areas of RFNC - VNIIEF activity. The Institute has a highly capable staff of scientists and the
country’s largest computing resources. The Institute’s scientists have developed calculation methods for
most sophisticated problems and unique software, neutron and nuclear data banks and characterization
libraries with the very diverse information of material properties. Also, they have checked out unique
procedures for calculations and theory.
With the vast experience acquired here, VNIIEF is
successfully conducting fundamental and applied research in
various fields of science and engineering. The most dynamic areas are: nuclear physics, gas dynamics,
kinetics of nuclear and thermonuclear reactions, material properties at high energy densities, nuclear
to laser energy conversion, ultrahigh magnetic fields, laser fusion, and nuclear power safety.
As
a world-class research organization, RFNC-VNIIEF is working towards adaptation of its technology
developments to commercial goals, which includes design of various devices and
systems.
RFNC-VNIIEF is closely cooperating with the leading Russian scientific and commercial
organizations, research institutions, design offices and production associations.
Since the early
90s, RFNC-VNIIEF has been closely involved in the international science
and technology interactions subject to the existing government and agency-level regulations.
This offers an opportunity to perform research projects and advance high technologies for the Russian
and international markets, where the Institute’s personnel can integrate into the international science
and technology community. Contacts have been developed with international organizations, industrial
companies, and leading research centers in the USA, France, Germany, the UK, Japan, China and other
countries.
RFNC - VNIIEF offers high experimental research capabilities used to conduct a great
variety of tests operations. The research and test complex (NIIK)
opens up wide opportunities for strength and life testing of various equipment and machinery as
exposed to external mechanical, thermal and climatic effects in their warranty period. They also include
stress-strain tests of structures under inertial, vibrational and shock-induced loads.
High
emphasis is placed on testing the safety of items in accidents such as fire, impact or flooding.
Operations on the RFNC - VNIIEF internal test grounds also include development and
proof-of-performance, e.g. explosion stability, load capacity, etc., tests of the various devices to
contain and remotely disable any terrorist or unidentified items..
With its wealth of engineering
ideas, high-technology developments and experimental capabilities, the Institute has been able to
diversify its activities by redirecting some facilities to commercial production projects.
Commercialization of R&D results, export of services and intellectual products, and search for
partners and new market segments are what has determined the VNIIEF activities in a civilian sector of
economy.
During its history there was quite a variety of scientific and technological challenges
that RFNC - VNIIEF met successfully. The result is that state-of-the-art technologies have been
developed and used in almost any sector of the national economy, ranging from medical equipment through
materials of unique properties. There is a great deal of concern in the problems related to human safety
and meeting the environmental standards.
RFNC - VNIIEF is the lead institution in Russia
developing nuclear materials control and accountability systems and making the sensing and alarm systems
as the current standards require them to be. The main developments are all protected by Russian patents.
Both the design solutions and know-hows and their wide applications serve a sound basis for innovation
technologies and projects, opening up opportunities for commercialization of the intellectual property.
