The USA delegation headed by the Deputy Secretary of Energy Mr. Daniel Poneman visited the Russian Federal Nuclear Center, Sarov, on the 27 of June, 2012 The goal of the visit was to discuss the prospects of cooperation within peaceful implementation of nuclear energy. The delegation on ROSATOM side was headed by the Deputy General Director for international cooperation Nikolay Spassky. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was represented by ambassador at large Eduard Malyan.
The delegates visited the Institute of Nuclear Radiation Physics and the Institute of Experimental Gas Dynamics and Explosive Physics. They also met with the leaders and experts of the Russian Federal Nuclear Center, who presented the reports dedicated to the activities, RFNC-VNIIEF is into, namely atomic energy issues and implementation of super-computer technologies as they are used for intensification of recovering of hydrocarbons. The Deputy Secretary of Energy Mr. Daniel Poneman, when concluding the visit of the US delegation, said, that he considers the meeting to be the historical event. “The science – the scientific fundamentals, VNIIEF is standing on, produces the great impression. The important goal, we are pursuing in a joint spirit with ROSATOM, is to establish a structure, which will give the scientists on both sides the ability to proceed with their collaborative efforts. With the international treatment at hand, defining the frameworks of such collaboration, the scientists from our respective countries will be able to solve the most complex tasks together, in particular to face the challenges associated with hazard of nuclear terrorism. We both accumulated great experience of using civil atomic technologies. Both sides are interested to further develop the technologies of fast reactors and perspective fuels. These are just the trends, where we can successfully move on hand by hand” – said Daniel Poneman.
